More on ducks and geese

 As I mentioned yesterday, the geese and ducks were away from the banks of Lake Tomahawk, which is how they stay safe from dogs (and children.)

 In the sluice which drains the lake into the Swannanoa River, I saw a few Mallard ducks, and a couple of ducklings!

 The mom is on the left, but the tiny little guy on the right is working against the current.

 Really there are 2 ducklings, one right behind mom, and the other in those shadows.

Finally a shot that makes each duckling visible!

Looking back across the dam, other ducks and geese can be spotted.

The Seven Sisters mountains

 From the dam at Lake Tomahawk, you look past the Lakeview Center to see mountains named Seven Sisters.  Today there must have been a lot of dogs being walked around the lake, because all the geese to be seen were swimming out in the middle.

 A new (weather-proof and vandal-proof) sign shows their placement and names. See below for details.

The salad pot luck

 The small container has my blueberries contribution...easy to make!

 Friends Don and Mary were sitting at our table.  There was a good size crowd.

The senior center had a pot luck of salads on Friday. Everyone contributed something. My neighbor and friend, Virginia and I sat together. Since her use of a walker makes it difficult to load up a plate, I brought her a dish with a sampling of everything. She ate it all too.

Downtown poseys (posies?)

A bit different from the Lake Tomahawk venue, these were the only chairs set up at 6:45 for a 7 pm concert.  At the lake there would have been people walking around it, and kids on the playground. And it would have been cooler with a breeze off the water.  This Thursday the concert was again here on Sutton ave and cherry St. Next week it will be back at the lake, which has undergone some major changes!

The Buncome County NC manhole cover. I recently heard that the PC term will no longer call these manholes.  I wonder if they will be person-holes!

Building the railroad

I've copied some of these photos below so you can see them in more detail.

The Andrews Geyser is still there, not with the hotel however. It is gravity fed, by a switch that opens a gate for the stream to go through from a higher elevation.

Trains in the Museum

Black Mountain was a train town...which brought many visitors here in the past. No more though. The Interstate highway is the best way to get here now.

Unfortunately some young visitors moved things around yesterday while i was downstairs talking to others...so the train got all it's cars taken off the tracks. It's probably fixable by someone with a steady hand and eye.

It is lots of fun when it's treated well...has bells, whistles and some phrases too.

Cherry Street

The Town Pump (center with a man standing in doorway) was open for business, but apparently didn't have any.  This was before the street concert last Thurs.  There's another one tonight starting at 7 pm.downtown!

Mountain Nest has nice arts and crafts (including some from my friends!)

Usually Cherry Street has cars along each curb, but in honor of the concert, they've been removed and the street closed off.

It was like a ghost town, except for us who came to hear music. And a few stores still open for business.
And I tried out the new ice cream shop "The Hop." Pretty good for $2.95 for one scoop.
