Last link on Blue Ridge Parkway bridge

Motorists zoom under it all day on I-26 between Asheville and Hendersonville NC. But this bridge is finally getting the piece lowered into place to complete it. The span will carry the Blue Ridge Parkway eventually. Of course there are still approaches to build and all the earth moving and  paving...I would say another year before cars cross it.

This is one of the favorite stretches to take along Asheville's BR Parkway...to avoid traffic, go 45 mph on a two lane road through the woods, up and down a bit, and around some curves, just like roads used to go...before interstates took most travel.

Of course you get there quicker on the interstates, but sometimes your nerves have been twanged a bit!

  1. We were talking about how interstates killed so many small towns. They are a blessing and a curse. It is good to be able to shave hours off travel, and make it safer too, but at what cost to small town America?

    1. Good point. America has so many long distances without anything in them, and that's mainly west of the Mississippi, I'd guess. Some towns decided that the interstates had to go around them, and some said, sure go right through the middle of town. Interesting how things changed by those decisions! Gainesville FL has the interstate outside of the main cultural center, but another kind of center developed around the dollars of tourists.

    1. Mmm, your archaeology and engineering appear to have been melded somewhere along the line with missing pieces of photo equipment!

    1. Lots of space on your comment, which was in the spam folder until I just saw it Eileen. Glad you had a chance to go along the Parkway.

So glad to have your comments...whatever they may be. I'm one who likes to reply sometime or another, so others will see that; or you might happen back sometime and see what conversation might have started.
