Apartments and the cemetery - Old Salem, NC

Before we got to the cemetery entrance, we were interested in a non-colonial-period building.  What was it, with the white columns and wrought iron railings?

It's the BELO residence.  Apartments apparently, with air conditioners poking out many windows on the three stories.

Across the street we found a for sale sign in the window of one of these three small houses.

Then turning down a long alley (which doubtless could hold carriages, but probably not cars,) here was the entrance to the huge Moavian Cemetery of Old Salem, NC, "God's Acre."

It is more than a few acres.

We were astonished.  And reminded that men and women are buried separately, not as families nor couples.

The Kremer House is "On Wings Like A Dove: A ministry to families of prodigals and prisoners."  Since this building is within the cemetery gates, I was surprised it didn't have anything to do with it.  However the huge Moravian church was right outside the gate.

Tomorrow: The Doctor's House.

Quote for the day:

Retire to the center of your being, which is calmness.

  1. I am confused about the Mormans having a cemetery in the Moravian Church area. The house is a nice house and has worn its history well.

    1. Good catch LD, I've changed the word now to Moravian Cemetery...my mistake.

  2. Very nice photos of Salem. They certainly have maintained their lovely old buildings and landmarks. Don't know much about the Moravians but perhaps some of the women were glad to finally have the husband not quite so near. -- barbara

So glad to have your comments...whatever they may be. I'm one who likes to reply sometime or another, so others will see that; or you might happen back sometime and see what conversation might have started.
