The greenery above is Rhododendrons, which stay green throughout the winter. They have even set their buds already waiting for spring.
We were glad to find a safe spot to pull off the roadway so I could take pictures. This is the last of our day trip photos. Thanks for coming along with us!

ReplyDeleteThe parkway is patrolled of course, so boulders that roll onto the roadway are quickly pushed to the sides. I saw one big one as we drove by...but there wasn't a place to pull over to take a photo. All these cuts in the mountains were made back in the 30s when the parkway was built...and of course in geologic time that was just yesterday!

ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of someone who brought snow down south for kids to slide on...and throw and make snowmen. It's something they didn't have any experience with. I've moved pretty much into the south, though we may have a few inches each winter. It was fun and I'm glad you came along.

ReplyDeleteThere's another long wall of ice on a turn-off to Craggy Gardens picnic area...but it's not possible to park anywhere near there...so having a driver stop for just a moment, and leaning out the window, is the best idea. We didn't go that direction on this trip. At higher elevations there has already been snow.
