Old Salem and War of 1812

OK, the Old Salem event for the War of 1812 wasn't to commemorate the Brits burning the White House.  It was to honor the writing of the Star Spangled Banner.

 

The baker (and his wife) gave their friendly presentations, but we were pretty tired and hot by the time we visited the bakery.  When we looked at the prices of the Moravian cookies (which are delicious, but weren't offered as samples) we had to pass.

This house wasn't open as a display when we visited Old Salem on Aug. 23, 2014.  But the sign clearly shows "pants made here."  I would imagine that a tailor worked here.

It's not every day you get to see the original 13 stars and stripes.

We got to look through the displays about Blum's printing outfit, and the press was over in the big information center.  Amazing how important printing was (is) if you think back to prior to the internet.

However,  his bookkeeping was all hand written!

There were also a lot of needlework pieces on display, but no photos were allowed.  I was aware how many hours put forth by the women of this town doing the decorative needlework.  Everyone's clothes were probably also made by hand, but we didn't get to see any of the more mundane trappings.

While we strolled through the main square, a brass band was giving a rendition of Summertime from Porgy and Bess.  We kind of raised our eyebrows at a brass band rendition.  They were there to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812.  It was actually the 200th anniversary of the day the British burned the White House, but nobody said anything about that.
