Locally owned and operated

Quote for today:
The more you sense the rareness and value of your own life, the more you realize that how you use it, how you manifest it, is all your responsibility. We face such a big task, so naturally we sit down for a while.
Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi

The store, Black Mountain Farmer's Market, is located on the curve of road from S. Ridgeway into Sutton Ave, due to the railroad tracks being right along Sutton Ave.

It's much less cluttered in the winter, than spring and summer when plants are all over the place.  Many local farmers bring their produce here.  And since the Tailgate market is only Sat. mornings, this is a great place to find fresh foods any day.

Source

A recent addition to our neighborhood...after the house was completely rennovated for an Alternative Healing Arts center on the ground floor, (Source), with an apartment for one of the staff members upstairs, the town of Black Mountain zoning commission said it wasn't legal for this business.  The zoning allows a resident to have a business in their home.  But apparently the clarification for this business wasn't given appropriately, and a neighbor has complained about the additional traffic the business brings on the sidewalk out front.  So the owner is appealing the decision, and remaining open at this time.  The house looks so much better than it used to when another friend of mine lived there.   And many of my friends go to accupuncturists, chiropractors and massage professionals here.  There was even a benefit concert given to help defray the court costs of the appeal.  Even the town has backed down to reduce court costs.

Another good restaurant

Wood fired pizza, pasta and great salads are dished up at "Fresh."  My friend Tim usually gets one of those half salads and asked for 2 skewers of grilled shrimp on the side.  Mmmm...good idea.

Theatre returns to Black Mountain

A live performance of a musical, a one act rendition of "Quilts" was given at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts last weekend.

My friend Diane Hutchins had a major role.  It was a most enjoyable performance.  I can't wait for more theatre in Black Mountain!

Tiny earth and Saturn

Astronomy Picture of the Day.
From the Cassini explorer last week.  We are so insignificant at times.  Yet we think we are everything.  Perspective.

Yes, this is in my neighborhood.

French Broad Chocolate

If you like chocolate, beware so that you might still have money to pay the bills.  This is an extravagant place to go!

Center for the Arts

The old City Hall building is now the Center for the Arts (with Open sign)  further along State St. is the SVM (Swannanoa Valley Museum) which has a great collection of artifacts from the area (but is closed for the winter months.)

The BMCA (Black Mountain Center for the Arts) runs our clay studio which I talk about frequently on my other blog HERE.  Or you can check out the web site for BMCA here. http://blackmountainarts.org/wp/

They haven't got the right sign up yet.

You know, the one that says Barbara Rogers slept here...

But this is the turn-off, really a driveway, which apparently the people who live there believe is a road.  As in many turn-offs and driveways, it's steep.

I used to live in a one bedroom basement apartment on this corner.

There was one wall of the living/dining area completely glassed, thus giving a private view of the patio and mountains and making it a sweet place to live.  (I sneaked these pictures on a sunny day, but since there were cars in the driveway, I knew the people were at home, so I was in and out fast.)

I believe the people upstairs probably had a bit more fun looking out, as well as using a great fireplace.  I had roughly 2/3 of the basement area, as well as a storage area adjacent to the garage that held one car.  I stayed there a bit over a year, and upstairs at least 2 tenants' families.

There were strange set-ups, like my having a full laundry in my kitchen area, and the upstairs people having a stacked washer/drier downstairs tucked into a closet on my level.  I also had a zillion cabinets and counters, because the space had been designed for a workshop at one point.   The main difficulty I had was sleeping next to the furnace/air conditioner (in my closet) which was managed by an upstairs thermostat.

I gave up control of my life only so far when I retired.  Fortunately one of the upstairs families preferred not to use the air conditioner/furnace much, and I had a small window unit to combat the dampness in a basement...as well as a portable heater.

Golf anyone?

Hiawassee Ave meanders past Lake Tomahawk, going north right through the Black Mountain, NC golf course.  Makes you wonder which came first.

What a gorgeous day, and as I slowly drove through the course taking pictures (stopping every 100 feet or so) I didn't see any golf carts or golfers.

Hiawassee deadends onto North Fork Rd, the northern boundary of the golf course.  So I turned right and followed the last of the links along it.

And I think those bright colored people must be golfers.  Pictures taken on sunny but windy Nov. 10, 2013.
