My last post from up the hill showed the side of this building.

Yes, this is where Biodiesel fuel is sold in Black Mountain.  The Natural Food Store is also full of things that you might not find anywhere else.  My favorite is the bulk bin with chocolate covered ginger pieces.  What a treat!

North Fork ducks

I don't know if this stream feeding Lake Tomahawk is North Fork of the Swannanoa River, probably not...but here is where the ducks decided to feed the other day...with nice long shadows thrown by the bridge's railing.

Black Mountain Ave.

Lovely view up Rt. 9 over the mountain in the distance.  And what is that street sign?  I've never considered that Sutton Ave. passes the depot and becomes Black Mountain Ave. before it turns 90 degrees and becomes Doughtery.  It has absolutely no buildings on that half block of distance.

Boys in high school

...used to wear their hair in a style called a "D.A."  Duck's After. 

That white duck did come up for air when I wasn't holding the camera on him!

Incidentally, I am so grateful to report that none of my sons were in high school during the times when boys wore more of their underwear showing around their waists than their jeans. Youngest son may have been a undie-displayer in college however.  Not sure about my grandson...

Fitness (one place)

The town of Black Mountain is full of fitness outlets...so I'm just starting to share some with you.  You will see Pilates, Yoga, a fitness center with a heated indoor pool, and lots of other opportunities to stay fit here.  During the summer this is a mecca for hikers...thus a new restaurant "Trail Head" is doing well, and a store for runners.

A Temple

Scottish Rite Temple in Asheville, NC

It's title is across the lintel over the entrance.

This is a Masonic temple...here's the altar...


I don't know a thing about this.  I just found out my step-grandfather was a Shriner.  Is that the same?  Or does that connect to Masons?

I'll have to do some research when I get some time to look it up.

 OK- good old Wikipedia says this...

Shriner... is a men's fraternity rather than a religion or religious group. Its only religious requirement is indirect: all Shriners must be Masons, and petitioners to Freemasonry must profess a belief in a Supreme Being. To further minimize confusion with religion, the use of the word "temple" to describe Shriners' buildings has been replaced by "Shrine Center", although individual local chapters are still called temples.

Until 2000, before being eligible for membership in the Shrine, a person had to complete either the Scottish Rite or York Rite degrees of Masonry,   but now any Master Mason can join.

So my answer is yes, Shriners are Masons.  I'm not sure all Masons are Shriners.  But the funeral procession of my grandfather was by Shriners.  (I envision them in their little cars with fez hats on...but I bet it wasn't like that at all!)
