I love living in North Carolina

Today I feel like sharing a bit of history, and look at how it's right under our noses here in the mountains of western North Carolina.

Squire John Stepp’s Stage Coach Inn (probably posted before)
The Inn was originally built as a stagecoach stop by John Stepp around 1830 and was renovated and expanded in 1940. At its peak, the Inn had would host as many as 16-20 people for breakfast that were staying in the eight available rooms.

The Black Mountain Inn today (formerly Stepp's Inn) located on Old US 70 about 4 blocks from my home on Blue Ridge Rd.

At the turn of the 20th century it operated for several years as the Franklin Humanitarian Home (a TB sanatorium).

Notably, in 1940, as the famed Black Mountain College approached its zenith, the property was purchased by Mary Aleshire and Daisey Erb. Mrs. Aleshire was the manager of the Norton Art Gallery in Palm Beach, Florida. She artfully restored and updated the historic property. In 1942, the house was opened as the Oak Knoll Art Studio, which served primarily as a summer artist's retreat for Mrs. Aleshire and her many famous guest; Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, Norman Rockwell, Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan and Joan Sutherland among them.

In 1965, wishing to preserve the house, and prevent commercial development the Aleshires sold the house to their caretaker Jim Reid.

The house was purchased again in 1989 and lovingly restored by its current owners, who transformed it into the Black Mountain Inn.

Penland School of Crafts has long been teaching crafts of the mountains as well as more modern media such as glass blowing. The workshops and series of classes are attended by adults from all over the world these days. Everything from woodworking, textile arts, metal work with blacksmithing or jewelry making to wood fired pottery classes are very popular.

Because you didn't want all the photos at once

Another fence around a tree to perhaps protect its roots

Coming back where we started, and then to the Pack Library...

We loved the used book sales room

A lovely quite which took 17 years to create, with a panel from each of the 100 counties of North Carolina. Of course we didn't know where half of them were (the counties) and often their square didn't give any clues.

A really nice card was available with better photography of the quilt...

With this on the reverse side explaining how the quilt came about.

From the street level at Pack Library, is this well which serves the windows for the downstairs rooms. And a rather imaginative bunch of prehistoric critters graces the space with this mural.

It definitely harkens back to the library providing books from which these critters might have come.

May you grow still enough to hear the small noises earth makes in preparing for the long sleep of winter, so that you yourself may grow calm and grounded deep within.

More of our walking around this week

 ...in Asheville, NC.

An elder of the doll persuasion

Cute sunny pansies along a Wall Street eatery's fence

Another Wall St. eatery

The gingko trees caught my eye, even though most were past their fall yellow plumage.

Where all the yellow gold from gingkoes goes.

The day trip this week

Our three (Not) Musketeers went down the road to Asheville NC. To visit some stores, eat at a nice restaurant, and go to at least one book sale.

Across the street from Malaprops Bookstore. Our early arrival around 10:15 meant we window shopped until many stores opened at 11.

We decided we'd be back later to Woolworth Walk...where many arts and crafts are displayed in a lot of little booths. For purchases you just pick something up and go to the front counter to pay for it!

We enjoyed reading the chakras on the Tibetan Prayer Flags. Though it was fun to capture our own smiles in the window!

Wall St goes off to the left (in this photo) around the Flat Iron Building.

I found this green ball in the path in this store, so kicked it away, only to find it belonged to this lovely black Poodle.

We did shop in the tiny store on the right at street level in the Public Service Building, after lunch.

It was known by having lots of sayings to muse over and perhaps take home.

These are the large letters cut out of a Readers Digest volume. There were also smaller ones above, but no "C"s for my friend to give to her granddaughter.

Lunch at the Early Girl, which was open and two of us decided a brunch choice would be ideal. Our vegan friend had an impossible burger.

I'll share a bit more next time...

An Asheville luncheon

It looked quite busy, but our party of three was seated immediately.

Checking out the menu!

I loved that the Blackbird Restaurant had a Crow Bar!

Taken from across the street, the Blackbird is on the corner under the W hotel. I can't remember what the double decker bus is called, but it just does coffee and snacks.

We paused for a quick selfie on our way to the movie (see tomorrow's post!)
