Sylva NC First shop

The old Jackson County courthouse was decorated with lots of little trees and a red bow on top of each one. Sorry this was a drive-by photo through a windshield...but I've cropped out as much as I can! Teresa was good enough to give me two chances to take photos, but I kept getting reflections from that bright sun!

Then there's this one with the reflection off the windshield.  Which one do you prefer?
This is not the current active courthouse for Jackson County, but is listed as a Historic Site.

My friends got out of the car and started doing fun things...Helen on a little stool while Teresa in shades laughs out loud. We did have a fun time that Friday morning!

So a woman with broom in hand came out of the shop behind us, and offered to take our group photo. It's a good thing she took lots of them, because one or another of us had her eyes closed in the bright sunshine. Who knows whether Teresa had her eyes open or not!! Mine are just squinting!

The woman photographer invited us into her shop, the Mountain Laurel Co-Op. We admitted we came for the book stores, but we did come back and purchase some old fashioned candy later.

Comment from today, Jan 11. Weather is cloudy and cold here in Black Mountain, 36 F when I woke at 8 am. I'm adding this detail, because I like looking back and finding which day what happened, weather-wise.

Today's quote:

The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. -Albert Einstein, physicist, Nobel laureate (1879-1955)

  3. Doesn't look very cold there. Did you find any books to purchase?

    1. I did come home with 2 new books, Thomas Merton's and Mary Oliver's. And fortunately I'd received a Christmas gift card to one of these bookstores...coming up soon. It was probably in the 40s that day, with nice warm sunshine.

    1. We had planned this for weeks, since one of us has a job and has to arrange to go places ahead of time. We were really happy with the beautiful day!

    1. Oh, I didn't read far enough on Wikipedia. Since the used bookstore sponsored by their Friends of the Library is huge, I would expect their public library must be pretty big also. I did see that this old courthouse was modeled on the one in Madison County!

    1. Whoever decided to build it on that hill, certainly meant for everyone to climb up it to various courts and offices.

    1. I agree, I put the second so dark to minimize the windshield glare...went too far. It sure is an outstanding building!

  8. Such fun to shop with friends! Funny, our county is Jackson too, and our courthouse looks a good bit like the one in your photo. I really like that quote, Barb. He was exactly right.

  9. It looks like it was a good day, and on a quick glance, the reflection photo looks more interesting. In general, though, get your camera as close to the glass as possible to keep reflections to a minimum.

    1. Oh that's excellent advice. I'll try it next time! Thanks.
